Handwritten lyrics for David Bowie‘s iconic single “The Jean Genie” were sold for an impressive £57,000 at auction. Dated, titled, and signed by the late legendary artist, the sheet was gifted to Neal Peters, the former President of the New York-based David Bowie Fan Club in 1973.
Auctioneer Paul Fairweather expressed his delight with the outcome of the sale, stating, “We’re well pleased with the price achieved for this historic set of lyrics.” The sale also included a 2009 letter detailing Bowie’s gift to Peters and various photocopied documents about the fan club.

“The Jean Genie” was the lead single from Bowie’s sixth studio album “Aladdin Sane” released in November 1972 and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album, a half-speed mastered LP and picture disc LP pressed from the same master will be released in April. A 4K remastered version of the music video for “The Jean Genie” was shared last month.
Bowie passed away on January 10, 2016, after privately battling cancer for 18 months. His final album “Blackstar” was released two days prior on his 69th birthday. Bowie’s daughter recently shared a home video to mark the seventh anniversary of her father’s death.
